Yorktown is the one place in our service area where the color matters as much as the coat. The village sits inside Colonial National Historical Park, the surrounding York County neighborhoods lean heavily Colonial Revival, and a modern color on a colonial elevation looks wrong from the road even when the work underneath it is good.
Colonial elevations are all about the trim
The reason a colonial reads correctly is symmetry and crisp lines: window casings, muntins, shutters, the door surround, the cornice, the porch columns. Those are narrow surfaces with a lot of edges, and every one of them is a place where a fast brush leaves a wobble that the eye picks up immediately because the rest of the elevation is so regular.
That work is cut in by hand. Shutters come off where it makes sense to take them off, so the edges and the back get finished and the wall behind them gets painted rather than painted around. Muntins get a steady line at the glass. It is slow, detailed work, and on this style of house it is the whole job.
Historic color, and getting it right the first time
Colonial palettes are narrow and they are unforgiving. The difference between a correct historic green and a green that looks like a modern approximation of one is small on a fan deck and enormous on a whole house. Yorktown and York County also have properties inside historic districts and covenanted neighborhoods where the palette is not entirely a matter of taste.
This is where the color consultation earns its keep. Sample boards painted with the actual product get hung on your house, looked at in morning light and again in the afternoon, and decided on before anything is ordered. Choosing a historic exterior color from a two-inch chip under a shop light is how people end up repainting twice.
Beyond the village: Tabb, Grafton and Seaford
Most of York County is not the historic village. Tabb and Grafton are largely 1970s through 2000s brick and vinyl on wooded lots, and Seaford runs down to the water with a mix of older cottages and newer builds. Those are ordinary repaint jobs with the ordinary Peninsula conditions: humidity, heavy tree cover, and shaded elevations that grow mildew and need treating before they are painted.
The wooded lots matter more than people expect. Overhanging limbs keep a wall damp, drop debris on fresh work, and in some cases have to be dealt with before an exterior can be done properly at all.
