Virginia Beach is where the shop is, and it is where most of the work is. It is also the hardest city in Hampton Roads to paint well, because a house four blocks from the ocean and a house off Princess Anne Road are two different jobs with two different failure modes.

Chesapeake is a different painting problem from the beach cities, and homeowners who move inland from Norfolk or Virginia Beach are often surprised by it. There is less salt here. There is a great deal more standing humidity, more tree cover, and more houses on large lots with north elevations that never see direct sun.

Norfolk has the oldest housing stock we work on and the least forgiving air. A great deal of the city was built before 1940, which means original wood windows, deep trim profiles, plaster walls and a lot of previous paint layers. Add salt and humidity off the Elizabeth River and the Chesapeake Bay and you have a city where preparation is most of the job and the painting is the short part.

Painting in NorfolkHampton
Hampton sits on the water on three sides, and the housing runs from 1890s Phoebus through 1920s Wythe bungalows to post-war ranches and newer builds out toward Big Bethel. On the Peninsula the wind comes off the Chesapeake Bay and the Hampton Roads channel with very little between it and the house, which changes what an exterior needs.

Newport News runs about twenty-five miles end to end along the James River, and the housing changes completely as you go. A 1918 Hilton Village cottage and a 1990s Denbigh colonial are not the same job, and pricing them as though they are is how homeowners end up disappointed.

Yorktown is the one place in our service area where the color matters as much as the coat. The village sits inside Colonial National Historical Park, the surrounding York County neighborhoods lean heavily Colonial Revival, and a modern color on a colonial elevation looks wrong from the road even when the work underneath it is good.

Suffolk is the largest city in Virginia by land area, and it contains two almost unrelated painting markets. There is the northern end around Harbour View and Bennetts Creek, which is newer suburban housing on the water. And there is everything else: a downtown historic district of Victorians and foursquares, village neighborhoods like Driver, and a great deal of rural property where the nearest neighbour is a field.

What is the best time of year to paint a house exterior in Hampton Roads?
Late spring once the heaviest pollen has dropped, and early autumn. Both give a coat time to cure before it takes weather. Deep summer heat on a south or west wall shortens open time and causes lap marks, and heavy spring pollen can settle into a coat before it sets.
